The Acai berry (pronounced ah-sy-ee) is grown in the South American rainforest.

Recently, the fruit has gained a lot of attention as both a fruit juice and as a dietary supplement. Some of the acai berry health benefits can be useful as one of the tools to help manage diabetes.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Weight Loss For Men" website -- http://www.WeightLossForMenusa.com -- pointed out;

“…The primary goal of a diabetic is to control the amount of glucose (sugar) that circulates in the blood. Carbohydrate foods should be chosen carefully, as they are the primary source of high blood sugar. Acai berries have a low glycemic index, which indicates how much a certain food raises blood sugar after ingestion. The lower on the GI scale, the slower the food is digested and released into the bloodstream as glucose…”

Men who have type 2 diabetes are more likely to be overweight. Because acai is slower to digest, it remains in the stomach longer, leading to increased satiety and less hunger. This can help with weight control by lowering the amount of calories that are consumed.

o have abnormal cholesterol levels, which contributes to cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that diabetics particularly pay close attention to LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Acai contains phytosterols, a type of plant fiber, which interferes with the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. The decrease in the amount of cholesterol absorbed leads to less that circulates in the blood stream, leading to plaque buildup, narrowed arteries, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

In addition to phytosterols, the fatty acid that is present in the acai berry is a monounsaturated oleic acid that is similar to olive oil. This aids other factors, such as omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, to make cell membranes more supple and able to function more effectively. For diabetics, this is particularly important for the insulin receptors in cells. Insulin resistance occurs as a result of the cell not accepting the glucose for energy, so it continues to circulate in the blood, causing further damage.

“…The acai berry is known for its high levels of antioxidants, particularly antocianine. It is also high in vitamins C and E. These antioxidants can reduce the amount of oxidative stress and tissue damage that occurs as a result of chronic high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Antioxidants may also protect diabetics from common complications such as retinopathy (eye damage) and nephropathy (kidney damage)…” H. Milla added.

Diabetics should not use acai as a stand-alone treatment for diabetes, but should consider it as part of an overall diet and exercise plan to control blood sugar levels.
