There are no two ways about it. The Omega 3 fatty acids DHA EPA are very beneficial for our health. Not only do they protect our heart and ease the flow of blood in the arteries, but also protect us from Cancer, Arthritis, AMD and even Alzheimer’s disease.
The question is – which one is the better of the two and how much quantity do you need to get these results?
Till recently, EPA was thought to be the more important of the two. Most fish supplements in the market still contain it as the dominant ingredient and DHA as a secondary one.
Latest research has, however, shown that of the Omega 3 fatty acids DHA EPA, it’s DHA that is the most beneficial one. It is chiefly responsible for all the health benefits attributed to Omega 3, with EPA providing a supporting role.
Another factor in favor of DHA is – our body can internally convert DHA into EPA if there is a need for more EPA. The reverse conversion – EPA to DHA – is not possible.
So it makes more sense to focus on DHA as your primary Omega 3 fat and then add on EPA as a supporting one.
However just taking enough Omega 3 fatty acids DHA EPA is not enough. You need to check a few other things also to make sure you are taking the best Omega 3 fish oil.
Number one – make sure the oil has been properly purified, preferably by Molecular Distillation. This is the most effective technique for removing the contaminants from the oil that the fish may have ingested from the polluted ocean water.
This purification process also keeps the oil fresh and prevents it from getting oxidized – a big problem in other purification methods.
Two – avoid taking an enteric coated fish oil supplement. While in other supplements this coating may be required, not so in Omega 3 oil. More often than not, it is used to hide the rancidity of the oil. A soft gel is a better delivery mechanism for the oil.
