Yue-Sai Kan (1st) Charles Walsh - March 1985 Air date
People magazine called her the most famous woman in China. Time magazine proclaimed her the Queen of the Middle Kingdom. The Congressional Record deemed her The De Facto Citizen Ambassador!
They all accurately, if not completely, describe Chinese American Yue-Sai Kan, whose life straddles the East and West as a best-selling author, Emmy-winning television producer, entrepreneur and humanitarian.
In 1986, the television series One World produced and hosted by Yue-Sai Kan aired on Chinas national television network CCTV, giving millions of Chinese the first glimpse of the outside world and made her a household name in China. In 1992, she successfully transformed herself from a TV personality to an entrepreneur by creating the Yue-Sai cosmetics brand which is recognized by over 90% of the Chinese population today. Forbes magazine reported that she changed the face of China one lipstick at a time! For the past 3 years, her life style television series Yue-Sai's World aired nationally in China and has garnered raved reviews, including a phone call from the Chinese President Hu Jin Tao.
Yue-Sai Kan's uncanny understanding of China's needs is shown by the subjects chosen for her best-selling books --- On Television Production (when TV was just starting in China); Yue-Sai's Guide to Asian Beauty (when no Chinese were using makeup); Etiquette for the Modern Chinese (when the Chinese government needed to educate its massive public about good modern manners); How to Be a Beautiful, Healthy and Successful Modern Woman (the first comprehensive life style guide to career women in China); and The Chinese Gentleman (when Chinese men wanted to become the new international gentlemen). Her latest publication is The Complete Chinese Woman, which came out in May, 2007 and has proved to further solidify her role as an arbiter of style and taste in China.
Yue-Sai Kan's latest entrepreneurial adventure is House of Yue-Sai, an East-meets-West lifestyle retail concept aiming to bring style, elegance and inspiration to Chinese consumers. First store opened in Shanghai at the end of 2007. Major categories include fine furniture, bedding, tabletop, lighting, decorative accessories, unique gifts and a lady's corner. In the spring of 2008, House of Yue-Sai formed its new Interior Design Department. The team's international mix of design professionals specialize in high-end interiors custom built to meet clients needs. Plans are also being made to bring 6 House of Yue-Sai boutiques to department stores and specialty malls in Shanghai by the end of 2008.
Yue-Sai Kan is the first and only living American featured on a Chinese postage stamp. Her official website is www.yuesaikan.com. Her popular Chinese blog is located at blog.sina.com.cn/jinyuxi. House of Yue-Sai's homepage is www.houseofyue-sai.com.
